Tow Trucks & Wreckers: Your vehicle's saviour

What is a Tow Truck?

Most people have a fear of tow trucks – and with good reason. They can represent car-kidnapping punishment for bad parking decisions. Tow trucks are special vehicles used in many ways, including transporting impounded, disabled, improperly parked, and scrapped motor vehicles from one point to another.

What's the difference between Tow Trucks and Wreckers?

A tow truck is a truck that can tow or haul a vehicle, but a wrecker truck can also recover vehicles. Sometimes, it can also be a tow truck, but a tow truck cannot also be a wrecker truck. Makes sense?

Here are the main types of tow trucks:

Boom Tow Truck

Boom tow trucks use an adjustable boom to recover motor vehicles over an embankment or from a ditch. They are mostly used to recover heavy vehicles such as flatbed trucks or heavy-duty trucks.

Wheel Lift Tow Truck

A wheel lift tow truck uses a hook and chain technology to draw the front end of the vehicle clear of the ground so it can be moved. This is very common tow truck seen around town pulling cars that either suffered mechanical failure or an unfortunate parking infraction.

Flatbed Tow Truck

As its name suggests, flatbed tow trucks are fitted with a flat surface or a bed that can be inclined or slid back to the ground level using hydraulic technology. Flatbed tow trucks are mostly used to transport completely damaged vehicles either of medium or heavy-duty size and weight. Sometimes they are also called rollback trucks.

Integrated Tow Truck

An integrated tow truck is when you have boom and wheel-lift technologies integrated together. Also known as self-loaders, integrated tow trucks are often used to move illegally parked vehicles. Operators are not required to hook up the vehicle because an apparatus inside the truck makes quick pick up possible.
