Boom trucks mount a crane on a truck chassis or flatbed, letting one vehicle lift, place, and haul materials without a separate crane rental. The three main styles - knuckle boom, telescopic boom, and cherry picker - differ in how the arm works and what job it's built for.

What's the difference between a knuckle boom, telescopic boom, and cherry picker truck?

A knuckle boom (articulating boom) folds at multiple joints like an elbow, collapsing into a compact footprint behind the cab - ideal for tight delivery sites and unloading material directly off the truck bed. A telescopic boom extends in a straight line for maximum reach and lift height on open sites. A cherry picker (bucket truck) replaces the hook or grapple with a personnel bucket to lift a worker rather than material - common on utility and tree-trimming trucks.

Shopping specifically for an articulating crane? See our dedicated knuckle boom truck & picker truck buying guide for sizing and inspection details.

What should I check before bidding on a used boom truck?

Cycle the boom through its full range to check for smooth, even movement at every joint, look for oil leaks at cylinder seals and pivot pins, check the outriggers for wear and full extension, and ask for load chart documentation confirming rated capacity at your working radius.

We offer multiple ways to buy a boom truck: live onsite auctions, online auctions, buy now, or make offer.
